Hayao Miyazaki’s latest The Boy and the Heron earned the famed Studio Ghibli director his very first Golden Globe win.
First released in Japan in July 2023, the movie triumphed at last night’s (January 7) Golden Globes, where it received the coveted award for Best Animated Feature Film beating competitors such as Suzume and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The film is loosely based on 1937 novel How Do You Live? by Genzaburō Yoshino.

Penned by Miyazaki, the movie follows protagonist Mahito Maki, a 10-year-old boy grappling with the death of his mother in a hospital fire during World War II and the new marriage of his father. While in a profound state of grief, Mahito befriends a talking grey heron, who lures him into a magical adventure.
Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki said in response of the movie’s Golden Globe win: “I am very happy to hear the news that The Boy and the Heron has received an award at the historic Golden Globe Awards.
“This is the first Golden Globe awarded to a Studio Ghibli film, and it is a very special feeling.”
Not long after hitting cinemas, The Boy and the Heron broke records in Japan as well as in the US. In the UK, it became Studio Ghibli’s highest-grossing film at the box office within four days of release. The previous record-holder was 2001’s Spirited Away.
Despite rumours of Miyazaki retiring again, it seems the filmmaker has no intention to leave the animated world behind just yet and is already at work on his next project.
“He’s constantly thinking about his next project. I can’t stop him. In fact, I’ve given up,” Suzuki told Libération in October last year.

“We were talking again just now, and he said something incredible to me. He said: ‘By the way, what was my last film about? I can’t remember’,” he continued.
“And then he started talking about a new project, so I’m not stopping him. As long as he’s working, I won’t be able to retire,” Suzuki added. “He’s 82, and I think he’ll go on until he’s 90. And I’m going with him.”
The Boy and The Heron is out now in US and UK cinemas. Nearly all of Studio Ghibli’s movies are available to stream now on Netflix.
